How to come to Hvar

The Island of Hvar is well connected to all travel connections. No matter if you are traveling by plane, car, boat, or any other transportation, there is no obstacle in reaching our paradise island.

Traveling by plane

The closest international airports to the Island of Hvar are Split, Dubrovnik and Brač. From the Split airport you'll have no trouble finding organized transfers and local bus lines to the Split harbor and from the airport of Dubrovnik to the Drvenik seaport. Also, there are available car rentals and taxies to reach the seaports from airports. The airport of Brač allows landings of smaller planes and charters. You can reach all of the Brač seaports by bus, car rentals, and taxies.

From all mentioned seaports, there are frequent various boat lines to the Island of Hvar.

Traveling by boat

There are four harbors on the Island of Hvar, two of which allow cars.

The main ferry seaport is in the city of Stari Grad, a 20-minute drive from Hvar Town. Ferries regularly drive from Split throughout the year and from Ancona (Italy) through the peak season.

Sućuraj is another ferry terminal, a 90-minute drive away from Hvar Town. Ferry regularly drives from the Drvenik seaport close to Dubrovnik.

Hvar Town and Jelsa are catamaran harbors. Various catamarans routes are connecting the Island of Hvar with nearby islands, as well as with Split and Dubrovnik.

  • Split - Bol (Island of Brač) - Jelsa (Island of Hvar)
  • Split - Hvar Town - Vis (Island of Vis)
  • Split - Bol (Island of Brač) - Hvar Town - Korčula Town - Dubrovnik
  • Split - Hvar Town - Prigradica (Island of Korčula) - Korčula Town
  • Split - Milna (Island of Brač) – Hvar Town – Korčula Town – Mljet (Island of Mljet, National Park) – Dubrovnik

All of the mentioned ferry and catamaran lines drive vice versa.

There is also a private catamaran service connecting Split and Brač Airport to Stari Grad.

Traveling by car

If you are traveling by car to the Island of Hvar, you need to get to the Split or Drvenik ferry harbor first. Main highway A1 connects Zagreb with both Split and Drvenik, and it is the easiest route if you are coming from north or east. You can enter A1 starting your trip from Rijeka, entering the west highway A6.

There is also a road along the Croatian coast from Rijeka to Split and Drvenik.

While driving through Croatia, it is obligatory to have a valid driver's license, car registration card, and Green Card as confirmation of car insurance.

There are available taxi and rent-a-car services in almost every city, all airports, and tourist resorts.

Traveling by bus

Numerous bus lines connect all parts of Croatia. There are also frequent international bus lines to all neighboring countries, Middle European and West European countries.

All bigger Croatian cities are connected with Split by bus, and there are bus departures from Zagreb to Split almost every half hour. Split central bus station is right across the Split harbor.

Another ferry terminal, Drvenik, is 92 km south of Split.

Stari Grad ferry terminal is also well connected by bus to Stari Grad town, Hvar town, and Jelsa. On the island, you can buy bus tickets in buses.

Traveling by train

The railway connects all bigger cities in Croatia except Dubrovnik. There are direct international railway connections with Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, France, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro.

You can visit Croatia by train from almost all other European countries through indirect connections.
